The Argonauts at Colchis

Canonical narrative

Jason reaches Colchis under a king’s impossible demand. Aeetes will surrender the Golden Fleece only if the stranger yokes fire-breathing bulls, ploughs a field, sows dragon’s teeth, and survives the armed men who spring from the earth. Medea, divided between family and desire, becomes the mind that makes survival possible. She gives Jason a drug and tells him how to anoint his body and weapons against fire and bronze.

Her instructions also lead him into the dark. Jason must bathe, dress, dig a pit, make offerings, invoke Hecate Brimo, and depart without looking back. Apollonius fills the scene with acts that are bloody, fiery, and dangerous. They belong to epic ritual, not a safe ceremony lifted from the page. Jason performs them alone while the ship and his companions wait.

Hecate answers. The ground shakes. An underground fire appears. Dogs bark through the darkness as the goddess approaches. Jason obeys Medea’s warning and does not turn. At dawn he carries the protection into Aeetes’ trial. The bulls’ flame fails to destroy him, and he tricks the earthborn warriors into fighting one another by throwing a stone among them.

Hecate’s role is brief but decisive. She is the invoked power whose terrifying manifestation confirms that the rite has reached its divine addressee. Medea remains the ritual expert, Jason the performer, and Aeetes the author of the ordeal. The episode does not turn every Argonaut into Hecate’s devotee or prove a historical Colchian liturgy. It preserves a Hellenistic poet’s vision of danger, knowledge, divine arrival, and the moral cost gathering around Medea’s help.
