Polydeuces Boxes Amycus

Canonical narrative

Pseudo-Apollodorus names Castor and Polydeuces among the heroes who sail with Jason. Their skills are not interchangeable. Elsewhere he assigns warcraft to Castor and boxing to Polydeuces, and at the encounter with Amycus it is Polydeuces who steps forward.

Amycus rules among the Bebrycians and compels strangers to box with him. The demand turns athletic contest into coercion: a traveler must accept the ruler's strength on the ruler's terms. Polydeuces takes the match and defeats him. The victory breaks the immediate danger facing the expedition and displays the specialized excellence that Greek sources attach to this brother.

The Dioscuri collective is present because both brothers belong to the Argonautic company, but the decisive deed remains Polydeuces's. Castor is not credited with the blow, and the episode is not converted into a generic twin achievement. Pseudo-Apollodorus gives the surviving framework compactly, naming the pair in the crew list and recounting Polydeuces's contest in the voyage narrative. The passage supports boxing, courage under challenge, and membership in the Argonautic expedition. It does not by itself prove a cult of the twins among every group later connected with the Argo, nor does it make every Argonautic adventure a personal myth of the Dioscuri.
