Canonical narrative
Zeus turns Aphrodite’s own power back upon her and plants desire for the mortal Anchises in her heart. The goddess sees him tending cattle on Ida and is seized by longing. Before she approaches him, she leaves the mountain and goes to her sanctuary at Paphos in Cyprus.
The doors close behind her. Within the fragrant precinct, the Charites attend to the goddess. They bathe her and anoint her with the immortal oil that belongs to divine bodies. The perfume is not ordinary fragrance but part of the poem’s language of deathless beauty. They clothe and adorn Aphrodite until her appearance is ready for the encounter she has chosen to disguise.
The scene shows the Charites at work. Grace is not abstract. It moves through water, oil, fabric, scent, touch, and skilled preparation. Yet the service remains inside Aphrodite’s story. The Charites do not become rulers of Paphos, and the immortal oil does not become an offering recipe for their worshippers.
When Aphrodite leaves Cyprus for Ida, she carries the completed work of the Charites with her. Their brief appearance makes transformation visible: desire has seized the goddess, and grace prepares the form in which she will cross the boundary between immortal and mortal life.
