The Birth of Dionysus

Semele dies after asking Zeus to reveal his divine splendor. Zeus rescues the unborn Dionysus and completes the pregnancy in his own thigh before Hermes carries the infant into concealment.

Canonical narrative

Semele is pregnant by Zeus when Hera approaches in disguise and turns intimacy into a test. If Zeus truly loves her, Hera suggests, he should come to Semele as he comes to Hera. Zeus has already sworn to grant Semele what she asks. Bound by the promise, he appears with thunder and lightning, and the mortal woman cannot survive divine splendor.

The child does survive. Zeus takes the unborn Dionysus from the fire and sews him into his thigh. When the second gestation is complete, Dionysus is born from his father and given to Hermes. The messenger carries him first toward Semele's sister Ino and Athamas, with further concealment following when Hera's hostility continues. The story makes the god's arrival pass through a mortal mother's death, a divine male pregnancy, disguise, fire, and flight.

Hesiod compresses the genealogy to Zeus, Semele, and the immortal son. Pseudo-Apollodorus supplies the fatal request and thigh birth. They agree on parentage but work at different scales. Semele is not erased by the second birth, and Zeus' bodily role does not turn Dionysus into a child without a mortal mother.
